AGEify participated during the 14^th – 17^th January at the 25^th anniversary of InterNEXT2022.

 

Our Sales Manager, Konstantinos Mavreas, was one of the panel speakers at the session “Don’t get blocked – Age Verification & Consent”.

As part of the panel, he had to answer about some of the emerging methods of age checking if consumers prefer not to share a facial image.

“It is important to clarify again the difference between Age Verification and Age Estimation. As correctly stated before, age verification is proving the exact age of the user, whereas in age estimation, the user usually needs to be either above a certain age or fall into a specific age group. So, for example here in the United States if you want to buy alcohol you need to be above 21, whereas if you want to access adult content you can easily be under 21, but you must be above 18.

For Age Verification, the norm in the industry is to use Documentation, Credit Card ownership, Utility Bills, SMS through your mobile phone (as the number is registered to a specific owner) and database Checking.

On the other hand, for Age Estimation, we can find Facial Biometrics, Social proofing, Voice and Language Analysis.

We can all imagine, that taking a selfie might be a bit intrusive for some, and they would prefer some other form of age estimation. Here come in place some alternatives, with the first being voice and language analysis, where using AI AV providers have managed to take the voice of the user, compare it through patterns of speech and language, and be able to estimate whether the user is above a certain age. This can of course be only an estimation, and if necessary, it can be combined with another method as well.

Another alternative comes through social proofing, where we can find two trends. The first being an analysis of the social media pattern of the user, again using AI, estimating an above or below the age limit required. The second trend, which is AGEify’s competitive advantage, is by using other age verified users as in-betweens, to confirm the suggested age of a new user. Here the new user enters his or her age, and then requests other users to confirm whether it is correct.

Summing up, as technology surges there will be new ways of not only estimating, but in the end verifying a user’s age, with the need of hard proofing.”
